A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MISS ERIN A. THEAD FOR HER OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE 71ST ANNUAL SCRIPPS HOWARD NATIONAL SPELLING BEE.
WHEREAS, Miss Erin A. Thead, a native of Collinsville, Mississippi, successfully completed the first three rounds of the 71st Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee for the second consecutive time; and
WHEREAS, an eighth grade student at West Lauderdale Middle School, Miss Thead was among 86 contestants from 249 to compete in the final rounds of the spelling bee; and
WHEREAS, Miss Thead received an award at the end of her seventh grade year for outstanding achievement due to having the highest averages in all her classes; and
WHEREAS, Miss Thead won the math and science awards for the eighth grade, won the district math tournament for two consecutive years, competed at the state math tournament and participated in the state geography bee this year; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her academic achievements and dedication to her education, Miss Thead enjoys spending her time playing the piano, playing chess, swimming, reading and writing; and
WHEREAS, Miss Thead has been lovingly supported in all her endeavors by her father, Larry Thead, an entomologist; her mother, Sheila Alawaine Thead, a teacher; and her three sisters; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to recognize and commend academic excellence by the young people of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do commend Miss Erin A. Thead for her outstanding academic accomplishments and her success in the 71st Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Erin A. Thead and the Capitol Press Corps.
